Yeaterday we recorded a Daytrotter Session - our first with the whole band (check out the 2012 duo session here) and then played a killer "Moeller Monday" set at Rozz-Tox. We'll let you know when the band session is live. There will probably be a bonus track or two from the show that night. We can't wait I hear it ourselves!
We tend to haul straight thru the entire state of PA a lot. So when Jason asked about us setting up an interview in State College, PA we said hell yes. It was really fun. Played some tunes from the new record and discussed some current events including making bright as you can and touring with Ani. Here's the link!
Man, oh man. We are so grateful to our friends at Beehive Production for capturing our performance of "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" in their Saranac Lake, NY studios. We've been trying to pin this live version down for YEARS and I do believe these folks nailed it. Thank you, Jeff & Sue!
In the last month we've had some great reviews and features from the likes of The Associated Press, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, No Depression, The Bluegrass Situation, Performer Magazine, Elmore Magazine, Pop Matters, Folk Alley, and Relix.
Check out the links below!
“'One of the year’s standout Americana albums."
"In the vanguard of today’s vibrant folk revival."
"The 14-song collection spans folk, bluegrass, vintage country and just about everything else that falls under the catch-all heading of 'Americana.'”
"Everything is masterfully performed as Mike Merenda and Ruthy Ungar sing about the charms of hard work, homemade wine and free parking. Amid the barn dance reverie created by fiddle, pedal steel, horns and more, Ruthy's versatile alto is the most glorious instrument of all."
"It’s that ability to go beyond the boundaries that allow The Mike + Ruthy Band to temper their folk finesse and do so with such skill, they’re actually able to set themselves apart."
"Cigarette gently faces the horrors of the world, praying that a good song will offer some kind of salvation. These uplifting songs do."
“Bright As You Can seems to be honoring the great musical traditions of the past while at the same time welcoming, with open arms, the future of what music can be.”
"True musicianship is alive and well."
- Performer Magazine (feature)
"On their upcoming Bright As You Can LP, the duo rumbles and tumbles their way through 14 finely crafted tunes that roam effortlessly through the whole span that is Americana, from alt-country to folk to bluegrass."
"This is a record about what it is to be human. It's a record about what it is to have an inextricable allegiance to tradition, while feeling compelled to speak for oneself. It's a record that will grab you, that won't let you go."
This past Friday we had the honor joining an all-star cast at Levon Helm Studios "home of the midnight ramble" for a beauiful and scortching tribute to Levon in honor of what would have been his 75th birthday. What a crew!
The Mike + Ruthy Band is tied for third with Rhett Miller with Black Prairie with 12 adds at AAA radio in our first week. Stoked.
This morning Folk Alley premiered "Rock On Little Jane," calling it "A fist-raising, you can do it, don't ever stop trying anthem, one that inspires all kids, no matter how old we are, to sing along."
We are so grateful for all the great early reviews that have been rolling in in advance of our 6/2 release date! Read the whole review and stream the premiere here.

We are big fans of "roots music authority" No Depression. Turns out we have some fans over there as well! Check out the premiere of our second single "What Are We Waiting For" and a GREAT album review by Kim Ruehl.
"This is a record about what it is to be human. It's a record about what it is to have an inextricable allegiance to tradition, while feeling compelled to speak for oneself. It's a record that will grab you, that won't let you go"
The Mike + Ruthy Band is thrilled to announce that we'll be opening for and backing up the one and only Kate Pierson (of the B-52's) for a run of shows this July that will take us to Atlanta, Athens, Nashville and Chicago! Roam if you want to, Roam around the world!
